I bugged all of you regarding your opinions on t rucks for my father in law, but now my dad wants one as well. We’re looking at brand new only, there are great deals to be had on pricing and financing as well, and used trucks have good prices around Denver.

We found a $14000 discount on a nicely loaded 2018 Titan XD - down to $36500 from $50500, but I can’t get over abysmal reviews on every website. Or, around $ 32-33K for a regular Titan with a 5'5" bed and long 4 door cab ($11500 discount from MSRP).

We found a 2018 RAM 1500 Tradesman for around $34000, with a leveling 2" lift kit and custom wheels and off-road tires. I’m guessing we could go lower than that for a bone stock tradesman.

But then I just found a 2018 Tundra SR with double cab, 8" bed, 5.7L V8, which is basically their work trim. We like the idea of a Tundra after owning a 2000 model since new and having it pretty much never break. They have 0% for 72 months financing as well, and that is very interesting.

Kinja'd!!!

This would be a truck for next 20 years - lack of options just means less stuff to break. I could find better wheels for $400-500.

Are we crazy considering an SR model of a Tundra, versus spending a tad bit more for a Titan XD with a way more manageable 6.5" bed, longer and more comfortable cab, way better equipped...or even considering a 2018 RAM 1500, where you can get about 25% discount on MSRP on just about any model in stock? Or, even a 2018 Silverado with 5.3L V8, Z71 package for around $35k?

Opinions? What would you buy for next 20 years, preferably under $35k?

If you really plan to have it driven into the dust...I dont see how you can go wrong with a Tundra

That’s an awkward looking truck, but will probably last 20 years.

It’s way too long, but if you go to the shorter bed in SR, it only comes with 4.6L V8. It’s older and actually worse on gas mileage than the 5.7L.

What I really want is around 38-39k, SR5 with TRD package, in white with white bumper and black grill - no chrome almost anywhere. But, dad doesn’t want to really spend extra 7000 on stuff we honestly don’t really need. I might see if I can talk them down a bit more...

I don’t think I’d count on a Ram lasting 20 years.

As for the l onger bed/shorter cab, it depends on how you’ll be using it. For me, I use my crew cab as a family hauler as well as a stuff hauler, so I genuinely need a crew cab. But if the back seat will only be used for occasional/short trips, then maybe the extended cab will work for you. I honestly think any of them could last 20 years, if you take care of them.

I think the best one to buy, is the one you like most and want to have for the next 20 years

That’s what’s really holding me back from any other truck - 18 years of almost no issues. Broken throttle position sensor, ignition key cylinder, whatever the part is called where column shifter connects to the steering column and nothing else. But, it does only  have 130k miles.

I drove a 2007 SR5 longbed with the 5.7 for two years for work . AMA.

Anyway, ancient motor but does everything you need and won’t leave you stranded.

5.7 is not really ancient - it’s only 11 years old or so, right? As far as I’m concerned, it’s well understood and any issues have been resolved.

How much of a pain in the butt was it to drive the 8” bed model? Did you have regular cab or double cab? 2018 comes with a backup camera at least... did you have anything break down? Any known weak spots? How did the interior wear with all the vinyl?

I drove my Mazda B-3000 (Ford Ranger) for 18 years and put 269k miles on it. It only stranded me a couple of times, both when I wore out the gear on the distributor.

In other words, don’t discount the Fords. You might find an F-150 which meets your needs for a good price.

It’s one or 2 people in the cab 99% of the time, and double cab is large enough even if 4 of us want to go somewhere with all the dogs.I would prefer double cab/6’5” bed, but it only comes with a 4.6 engine in SR. If we step up to SR5, then we can get the combo we want, but it seems more like $38-39k. I wonder if anyone has bought a new Tundra - is invoice about all I can expect for 2019 models, or is there more to be had?  If I could talk them down a bit more, maybe I could make my dad buy the SR5 within TRD.

Oh it wasn’t the easiest, but I’m lousy with large vehicles. I worked in Seattle often and had no real issues. Drove over curbs like a champ.

Weak spots? I had no issues over 60k miles but the vehicle was reassigned to a guy who actually needed an 8' bed... Far as I can tell, still being driven by the same guy, I’ve never seen it out for major repairs.

Interior is plastic fantastic but functional. T he 60-40 bench was super handy. Could actually fit 3 adults.

I would buy one if I needed to tow something or were still a laborer.

Now I will say this: I have also driven a 2014, which you could somehow get the 4.0 in... Do NOT get the 4.0 in a longbed Tundra, it is an absolute DOG if you need to do real work.

We went to a Ford dealership as well. Most discounts they had on trucks in stocks still brought them down to around 38k with the 5.0 V8. I am not interested in ecoboost for longevity reasons - I’m convinced a regular V8 would last longer and have less issues than a high strung turbo engine.

Plus, cabs on F150s are not the same as on other trucks. The large cabs are very expensive, and shorted cabs have the suicide doors on the back, just like our existing Tundra. Not a dealbreaker but I’d rather have 4 regular doors.

I guess what I’m trying to say is I wouldn’t mind a V8 XL or XLT if I could find one at a good price.

I certainly don’t know, but I would think you could get them down a bit more. The current Tundra is over a decade old now. That tooling is way paid off.

Otherwise, I’m sure you could get a smoking deal o n a leftover 2018 Silverado double cab, 6.5' bed. Those always seem to be the ones with the most cash on the hood. No reason you can’t get 20 years out of that. I’ve got 12-1/2 years so far with my ‘06 Sierra. The only real problem I’ve had was a few weeks ago, when a brake line burst on account of the rust monster. She’s been reliable as could be, and I plan to keep it many more years.

V6 4.0? They only offer 4.6 V8 on 6’5” beds, and 5.7 V8 on 8” beds on SR models for 2018. I guess I don’t mind anything about a base model Tundra, but I keep thinking to myself that I really don’t want a work truck when a few extra grand buys a much nicer trim.

Best I’ve seen on 2018 silverados around here is $7000 off. If I could get more, we did found a 2018 Silverado with double cab, V8, and z71 package with msrp of 42k or so on sale for 35k or so.

My dad really digs Silverados and would love one if we can get a better price.

At this point, the goalpost is $32k or so, and  0% financing. I’ll have to visit a few dealerships.

See, I think I know that’s the answer, and I keep trying to convince myself that other trucks would probably do the same. My buddy drives and swears by F150s - he drives around a lot for a living, and we barely put 1k miles per month on our trucks. 20 years would just mean a 200k truck. We can pretty much find any brand truck for $35k with options we want. Tundra at 32k doesn’t have the best interior (that’s being kind) and the 8” bed is an overkill. It still seems as the best purchase though.

Just submitted my info, and they dropped another $2000 automatically. So, it’s about $5k under msrp. I can spec a 2019 Tundra for right about $41k, so, $35500 or so after dealer fees. And, they have a “make us an offer “ button. So, all of this sounds great, I’ll have to visit the dealership.

4.0 was still available through 2015, inexplicably. I  don’t know much of anything about the 4.6... It's probably good enough! But the 5.7 looks like it still has 60+ more HP.

$32k is a tough price point to get to these days. Good luck though! I hope you can make that happen, because it will give me hope. Truck prices have gone batshitcrazypants. I paid under $22k out the door for a brand new 2wd crew cab. I know that was a while ago now, but the closest comparable truck these days stickers at close to double that.

Don’t buy a truck with a dealer installed lift kit. They all use the cheap spacer types and then over charge for them.

The problem with Toyotas is that when you look at total ownership costs, they will be just as high as or worse than others due to their poor fuel economy.

If you want to keep a truck for 10+ years, buy whatever one you like and focus on preventative maintenance. Regular oil changes, air filters, diff and transmission fluid, etc. I personally went with a Ram because they are easy to work on, and the coil spring rear suspension is superior to the others.

You do not want the ext-cab F 150. The rear doors are very problematic. Latches fail often, and before long you’ll have to slam the front door HARD to get it closed. As the hinges w ear, you’ll have to adjust the front door alignment every so often.     I wouldn’t buy one that wasn’t a 5.0L either.

I'm a Ford guy, and I would still tell you to get the Tundra.

My father in law has had his 2007 SR Tundra since new. It’s a Double Cab like the one pictured. The rear seat on these is actually quite roomy. When my son was a baby, it even fit a rear facing car seat with no problem. The only issue he’s had with it is the starter just failed about 6 months ago.

I had a base model CrewMax for a few years and it was a great truck. I also bought a 2002 Tundra new, and that was probably my favorite vehicle. I only sold that because I got laid off from my job not long after purchasing.

Is that a know issue for all, or just a random-might-hit-you sort of a thing? Only V8 F150 that fits the budget is extended cab model. That’s what we have on our 2000 Tundra and we had no issues since purchase.

Our 2000 has been rock solid and that is why Tundra is my #1 choice. But I really hate the idea of a double cab 8" bed SR, and double cab, 6'5" bed SR5 is around $36-37K minimum. My target price is $33800 to account for tax and dealer fees and still end up with $500 per month for 72 months.

So far, I only confirmed that Toyota has that financing option.

But, Chevy 1500 Custom or LT Z71 All-Star might fit the bill as well, if they can offer similar financing. Hard to say no to 72 months with no interest.

It’s fairl y common. I wish I could say if you were only opening the rears doors a few times a month you’d be okay. But some fail in the first few weeks after purchase. You’ll be covered under warranty for a while. Maybe they’ll update the latch/ parts by the time it expires?

i have the 5.7 extended cab 8' bed from 2014 and have 60,000 miles. it get at best 13 mpg combined and 15 high way . i have a lift kit and tires and do mostly town driving and get 10 mpg. the sr has power mirrors, back up camera, bluetooth, power windows, mine has the heated and power tow mirrors. my seats are fine but i do have seat covers.

Kinja'd!!!

i did under coat the truck with “ fluid film” so it doesn’t rust. i use it for work and personal use. i know that the 2014 model back seat flips up and you can put a storage box under it. and a little know mod , is that you can stake the back part of the seat that is against the back cab off on shorten to latches and you can make that fold down.  that only cost times and gives you a good spot for jacket and umbrellas

My opinion, get a Ford F-150 XLT with the 5.0 V8. The Tundra will last a long time, but it’s an outdated gas guzzler by modern standards and I think you’ll be fine with the 5.0 in the Ford. Buying the T undra is like buying a truck that’s already 10 years old and keeping it for another 20 years, whereas the Ford is a new-ish truck (actually just refreshed for 2018) but it’s not a brand new tr uc k, so the kinks have been worked out but it’s still fresh. Just my opinion though.
